How Did We
CONTINUE.....I began my DNA research in February 2006,
with The National Geographic Geneographic Project. I had a
sample of my DNA tested and the results I received were my
MTDNA, identified me as a member from halogroup L3.
According to National Geographics genetic scientists, L3
only occurs in Africa, but its derivatives are found nearly
everywhere. L3’s subclades are most prevalant in East
Africa, and gave rise to the M and N halogroups some 80,000
yeas ago, in which all Eurasians are descended from these
two groups. This information was welcomed, but it was not
what I had hoped for. I wanted to know an exact place and a
name of a people or tribe.
2007, I saw a miniseries show on PBS by Henry Louis Gates
Jr., named “African American Lives, part 1 and part 2,
wherein various African American celebrities’ DNA was
tested. Mr. Gates was able in most cases, reveal a match to
a people in Africa.
embarked on this quest to locate what people our ancestors
were, and where in Africa they came from. I enlisted the
help of my uncle, Norman E. Brown, to do paternal DNA
testing on behalf of his father, George W. Brown, his
ancestors and descendants. I decided to do DNA testing on
behalf of my maternal grandmother, Estelle Thomas Brown and
her ancestors and descendants.
And so our saga begins………
